Seeing my best friend Mal get married this past weekend was a very special experience and one that came with plenty of emotions. We had our last sleepover in the bedroom she’d called her own her entire life, one where we danced to the radio, painted our nails, gushed and cried over boys and vowed to always be friends. The moment I zipped her into her white dress and saw her as a stunning bride, it really hit me how much we’ve changed and grown since we first met almost 20 years ago and that putting in the time and effort to celebrate each other’s milestones is what has, and will always keep us close. Every little step, every gesture protects that bond and allows it to strengthen that much more.
Mal and I have gone through spans of time where we talked every day and others where we caught up every couple of months. It’s never on purpose, but it’s always been a comfort to know we could always pick up where we left off. Living far away from her for about half of our friendship, we haven’t always been there for each other’s biggest moments, but we’ve always done what we could to celebrate them. We’ve watched each other fall in love from a distance, but I couldn’t imagine missing her big day.
I couldn’t be more grateful to have someone in my life who knows me so well and wholeheartedly wants me to live the life of my dreams. I’ll always want the same for Mal and wish her a lifetime of dreams come true with her new husband.
